The Greek community came out to support Gamma Phi Beta’s annual philanthropy event, which raised just under $1,950.
All the money raised will go to Gamma Phi Beta’s national philanthropy, Building Strong Girls, which supports Girls on the Run and Camp Fire USA, two organizations that advocate for the empowering of young girls.
Junior English education major Amber Seibert said both of the organizations are dear to her because of what they do.
“I’m a feminist, and I think it’s really important to start girls with good self-imaging at a young age,” said Seibert, Gamma Phi Beta’s philanthropy chair. “I think it’s harder to intercept the stuff we deal with today, like bullying and poor body image.”
Seibert organized the Lip Sync and filled Mitchell Auditorium without ever having attended one in the past.
“It was really great to see how the audience would react,” she said. “I wish people could be on my side of the stage and see how everyone reacted. Being in college, sometimes you’re too cool to get excited, so it was really cool to them be goofy and crazy.”
Four judges watched each routine and gave comments throughout the night.
“I wanted to get people who were well-known on campus and had something interesting to say,” Seibert said. “I have Barbara Kalvelage for biology, and I knew she’s a firecracker.”
Mitchell Auditorium was bursting with laughter nearly every time Biology Instructor Barbara “Mrs. K” Kalvelage said a comment about the performances.
Joining Mrs. K as the official Lip Sync judges were Fraternity/Sorority Life Adviser David Stetter, Residence Life Graduate Assistant Terrence Tucker, and Kourtney Barrett, interim coordinator for student conduct for the dean of students.
In the end, first place went to Sigma Tau Gamma, who performed a mash-up including “Singing in the Rain,” a stripping song, and a few “Hercules” themed songs.
This was Sigma Tau Gamma’s second year in a row winning first place.
“I know they won first place, but I was really impressed overall – and I’m a big Disney fan,” Seibert said.
Freshman biology major Brianna Carney said before the results were given, she hoped Phi Delta Theta would win.
“The ‘Magic Mike’ routine was really good,” she said.
Carney saw “Magic Mike” in theaters, and she said she thought the Phi Delta Theta men did a good job with their rendition.
Phi Delta Theta tied with Kappa Alpha for third place.
Alpha Sigma Alpha Group 1 won second place with the final scene from “Pitch Perfect.” The women dressed up as the characters in the movie and got the crowd on its feet early in the night.
Their performance was proof that hard work pays off.
“We worked for an hour each night for two weeks,” said Ashley Lind, senior Alpha Sigma Alpha social work major.
