During a public meeting on Oct. 30, Student Government Association members voted on a few items.
One of those items is Resolution 2526 C, where Alex Scherschel, chief financial officer, is proposing certain amounts of funding for the Asian Student Union, students from the department of Social Work and the Southern Indiana Dance Marathon.
The amounts of funding are as follows: $400 to students of social work, $500 to ASU, $1500 to SIDM.
Another of those items was the nomination of a new president for the organization and the student body.
Leonna Benton, former executive vice president, has been nominated and elected following the resignation of former president, Alicia Cotton. Since she stepped down, Benton worked as an interim until SGA figured out what their next move was as a collective.
A nominee was chosen before Benton. Last week, Keaira Richmond, attorney general, lost a nomination due to not receiving two-thirds of the votes to lock the position for president.
When asked about Benton potentially filling in the position and how she felt, she responded with:
“I’ve been interim for about a month now, so I feel like over that time it has truly grown on my passion for wanting to be high in leadership,” she said. “To be able to help you guys and provide you resources in order to help the students outside of SGA.”
Benton won her nomination with 14 yeas, 0 nays and 1 abstention.
Benton’s hopes for the future are to help students within and outside the SGA office to come and work together. Things she plans on working on with the university are helping students with parking tickets and establishing an internal scholarship for students with SGA.
