Welcome back to campus, fellow Screagles!
Whether you’re a returning student or stepping onto campus for the first time, the start of a new semester brings excitement and opportunity — but it can also feel a bit overwhelming. Between new classes, professors and routines, there’s a lot to navigate.
We’ve got you covered with essential tips to help you hit the ground running and make the most of your time at USI.
Talk to your professors
Your professors aren’t just there to lecture; they’re your greatest academic resource. Don’t wait until you’re struggling to introduce yourself.
Drop by during office hours at the beginning of the semester, even if you have no questions. It shows you care and helps to build a bond that could be invaluable later in the term.
If you’re confused about an assignment or subject, clarify it right away. Most professors value initiative from students who come for help when needed. Remember that they want you to succeed as much as you do.
Developing these relationships early on can also generate research projects, internships and letters of recommendation down the road.
Find your study spot and use it
Location matters when it comes to productivity. Some students thrive in the noise of the University Center, while others need the quiet sanctuary of the Rice Library’s upper floors.
Experiment with different environments during your first few weeks. Try the collaborative spaces in the Recreation, Fitness & Wellness Center (RFWC), cozy corners in your residence hall or even outdoor spots when the weather’s nice.
Once you find your perfect study spot, make the effort to use it regularly. Having a designated study space helps train your brain to focus when you’re there. Finding the study spot is only half the battle. You actually have to show up and do the work.
Here is a guide to great places on campus to study.
Get involved and attend events
College isn’t just about academics; it’s about building connections and discovering new interests. USI offers over 130 student organizations, from academic clubs to recreational groups.
Attend the involvement fair and don’t be shy about signing up for organizations that catch your interest. Join intramural sports, become a volunteer with community service organizations or try out clubs in your major.
Campus activities such as guest speakers, game nights and cultural events are excellent ways to meet others and relieve the pressure of studying. The memories you make at these events can become some of your fondest.
Become a master at cooking in the dorm room
For our on-campus students, this tip is a game-changer: add water to your mac and cheese or ramen. Seriously, unless you want to set off the fire alarms.
Keep your fridge stocked with easy additions like shredded cheese, hot sauce or frozen vegetables to upgrade your basic meals. A small investment in seasonings can transform bland dorm food into something enjoyable.
Ask for help when you need it
Pride has no place in academic success. If you’re struggling with coursework, feeling overwhelmed or dealing with personal challenges, reach out for support.
The Academic Success Center offers tutoring and study resources for nearly every subject. Counseling and Psychological Services provides mental health support when stress becomes unmanageable.
Your resident assistants, academic advisors and even classmates are all potential sources of help. Remember, asking for assistance is not a sign of weakness.
Manage your time like a pro
Time management can make or break your college experience. Keep a planner, an electronic calendar, or any other method that suits you best to track assignments, exams and commitments.
Build time buffers into your plans to anticipate unexpected obstacles or opportunities. Learn to prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines, not just what seems easiest at the moment.
Remember
Starting a new semester always feels like a fresh start and in many ways it is. You have the chance to build new habits, form meaningful relationships and challenge yourself in ways that will shape your future.
Take advantage of everything campus has to offer, but don’t try to do everything at once. Focus on building a strong foundation this semester and remember every successful student started exactly where you are now.
Welcome back, Screagles. Let’s make this semester count!
