Theatre:
Performances of “The Odyssey Guild” are set for Aug. 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. at STAGEtwo at 321. The show, presented by the Brailroad Station, tells the story of adventurers, curses, pirates and treasure.
Ballet Indiana invites dancers over three to audition for this year’s performance of “The Nutcracker.” Auditions will take place on Aug. 23 at the Victory Theatre. They are also holding auditions for actors on Aug. 28 at the School of Ballet Indiana. Actors must be over 10 years old. For more details and to register, follow this link.
Music:
A show will be held to celebrate the release of Rush Slocum’s album “Self-Titled” on Aug. 15th at STAGEtwo at 321. Doors are set to open at 6 p.m., and music is to begin an hour later. Opening for this alt-pop group will be MNERVA, an alternative duo.
“The Magic of Motown” will take place on Aug. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Victory Theatre.
Georgia Funkadelic is an electric groove band from Evansville. On Aug. 16 at 5 p.m., they will perform at Space Monkey Records.
The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana will host another On the Roof concert on Aug. 23 from 6:30–10 p.m. that will feature music from Dreamstreet, EO Kids and Melanie A. Davis.
Visual Arts:
The reception and awards ceremony for “Artists Among Us” will take place on Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Kenneth P. McCutchan Art Center/Palmina F. and Stephen S. Pace Galleries. The show aimed to feature artwork from members of the USI staff who did not teach art classes. Artists included are: David Angel, Ella Avolio-Alschbach, John Baburnich, Shari Baird, Terri Bischoff, Daniel Craig, Del Doughty, Jaclyn Dumond, Trent Engbers, Spence Farmer, Adam Funkhouser, Barbara Goodwin, Kerry Hall, Sharri Herriott, Kristin LaFollette, Trista Lutgring, Meghana Makoday, Julie Minnette, John Morris, Laura Norrington, Jenna Pajdo, Erin Parchman, Susan Todd, Wendy Turner, Beth Weigand, McManus Woodend and Carrie Wright. The show will remain on display until Aug. 29.
“Litter Bug” is an art show designed by USI alumna Kayla Allen, who graduated last semester with a BS in art with a double concentration in illustration and interactive digital media. It was created with funding that she received from the USI Endeavor Grant to tell the story of a child named Cheyenne and her magical friend Farley as they attempt to save a forest from destruction. The show will remain on display in the Virginia Thomas Memorial Gallery until Aug. 22.
“Liminal Worlds” will be on display until Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. in the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. The show was curated by independent curator Kimi Kitada. Artwork is themed around the Asian American experience in the Midwest and features artwork from seven artists: Heehyun Choi, Daeun Lim, Lisa Maione, William Plummer, Sumire Skye Taniai, Heinrich Toh and Hope-Lian Vinson.
Film:
“Matinee” is a 1993 comedy film set in the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In it, Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman) plans to use this to his advantage to promote his horror film ‘Mant!’ to a community in Florida. A screening of this film will be held Aug. 23 from 8:15–10:15 p.m. at the Allen Family Amphitheater in Newburgh.
Miscellaneous:
“Wild Summer Lights” opens Aug. 14 at Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden and will be on display until Oct. 5. The event begins at 5:30 p.m., and the latest guests can enter is 7:30 p.m. To see this one-mile-long Chinese lantern display, tickets must be purchased online and separately from regular tickets. Sensory sessions of the exhibit will be available on Aug. 20 and Sept. 24 from 5:30–9:30 p.m. To make the event accessible to guests with sensory sensitivities, there will not be live music on these days.
Demolition City Roller Derby will have a game on Aug. 16 at Swonder Ice Arena against Vette B. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m.
Evansville Museum Geek Con will be held Aug. 23 from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science. The event will have panels, presentations, activities, board games, a vendor room and a cosplay contest.
Louis CK will perform “Ridiculous” on August 30th at 7:30 p.m. at the Victory Theatre. Louis CK has won many awards, including American Comedy Awards for his 2014 comedy special and his supporting role in the film “Best Hustle,” a 2011 Satellite Award for his acting in his TV show “Louie” and Grammys for his comedy albums, “Hilarious,” “Live at Madison Square Garden” and “Sincerely Louis CK.” He has multiple nominations from the Directors Guild of America for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series in 2013, 2015 and 2016, and in 2014 for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Specials. He also has multiple Primetime Emmy nominations for writing, directing, picture editing and acting.
