“Cowboy Cup” by Lenny Dowhie, professor emeritus and director of the New Harmony Clay Project, is on display as part of “Look Both Ways: 50 Years at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art” Saturday at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. I don’t know if the cup is removable from the base, but I enjoy the Western aesthetic that is depicted. From the saddlebags to the cactus, to the cowboy hat and gold stars, the combination of the cowboy elements with the almost cloudlike sand makes me imagine the generation of kids who dreamed of becoming cowboys when they grew up. I spent a lot of time squinting and zooming in on my photos of the sculpture to try to figure out what the silver at the bottom of the rainbow was. Treasure? A belt buckle? A flintlock? All I was able to conclude was that the sand has a canvas texture from Dowhie’s work surface, which I personally wish was not there, but is overall hard to notice.
