One death and at least six accidents later, the intersection of University Parkway and Indiana 66 will receive overhead lighting.
“Several months ago, we were asked to review that intersection to see if the intersection required or met the criteria for a traffic signal,” said Cher Elliot, INDOT spokeswoman. “It did not meet that criteria. However, we have done some additional improvements above and beyond state and federal requirements to try to help motorists aware of the intersection.”
The Indiana 66 and University Parkway are both four-lane roads that tee into each other; both roads allow motorists to travel at 55 mph.
The improvements Elliot mentioned includes:
- Added oversize stop bars Northbound University parkway.
- Changed stop sign Northbound from standard 30” standard sign to a 36” sign.
- Placed additional signage indicating where to turn for University Parkway.
- Painted lineation markings on the pavement to help motorists make those turns both on North and Southbound on the parkway to East & Westbound on Indiana 66.
Elliot said another improvement could be made.
“Another item did decide that would be beneficial and the intersection does meet the criteria for it would be if we installed this illumination,” Elliot said.
She said the illumination is something that the state could do to create awareness for the intersection.
The bid process for the overhead lighting will begin in September, Elliot said.
