The University of Southern Indiana will host the “56th Annual Juried Student Art Show” from Nov. 3 through Dec. 7. The reception will be held on Sunday, Nov. 16, from 1 to 4 p.m., including the awards ceremony, which will begin at 2 p.m.
The juror is Garrick “The Grik” Hargrove. He is originally from San Diego, California, and is an assistant professor of fine arts at Indiana University.
To accompany the exhibition, Hargrove gave a presentation on Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. in David L. Rice Library room 0017.
Hargrove is an award-winning composer, artist and educator who continues to pursue learning despite showing his work and performing for 20 years worldwide.
When asked why he wanted to pursue art and teaching, he spoke about how he comes from a creative family and enjoyed being able to turn the ideas in his head into physical pieces of work.
He explained that he became an art educator and started working as an artist because he did not feel represented in academia.
“[…] there weren’t many people who looked like me in academia, so I wanted to make that change and be that advocate and that voice for those kinds of students who maybe felt marginalized or weren’t feeling like they were supported,” said Hargrove.
He also explained what he looks for when he juries shows.
“I’m looking for, not necessarily a mastery of the medium, but a good understanding. I can really tell the work from students that feels like they are familiar with what they’re doing,” said Hargrove.
