I am a person who doesn’t usually get scared. Sure, jumping and shouting at me will startle me, because that is a natural reaction, but I don’t get scared in a lot of situations that others do (i.e., heights, spiders, snakes, the dark, etc.).
With that being said, the movie “Hereditary”(2018) scared me. After watching that movie, I was left with a feeling of dread that I hadn’t felt since I was little.
The tension within this film is extraordinary, and the imagery does not hold back. I don’t tend to look into movies before I watch them, and I thought I was simply turning on another random movie that would be forgotten within the next month. To this day, Toni Collette’s terrified face sits with me. She is a truly terrific actress who put her full emotion and more into this movie, and deserved better praise than what she received.
Adding to this was Alex Wolff’s incredible commitment to the film, having dislocated his own jaw in a scene to really hit the impact. And the events Milly Shapiro’s character went through cannot be properly described in how disturbing they are.
An amazing, terrifying movie and definitely my favorite horror film of all time.
