The action in “Clown” (2014) begins when Kent McCoy (Andy Powers) decides to dress up as a clown for his son’s birthday party. However, the suit, which he found inside a property he is renovating and selling, turns out to be cursed. Slowly but surely, a once-doting dad begins to transform into a child-eating clown.
The concept definitely has potential because of the tension between who Kent was and who he is forced to become, but the execution could be better.
“Clown” was created by what appears to have been a fairly successful production company, and Jon Watts, who has directed movies such as Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home. I have not been able to figure out what about this film feels amateurish, whether it is the way it is shot, the set design, the color grading, etc., but it doesn’t feel like it has big names behind it. At best, it looks like it was created by a professional crew from a small town.
It does not feel like it was made by a director who, a year later, would be working with Kevin Bacon. Then in 2017, with Marvel’s actors and actresses including Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Zendaya and Donald Glover.
Overall, it’s a perfectly fine horror movie. It’s full of plot holes and brings up a lot of interesting ideas, but never fully explores them. The clown was decently creepy with a cool design. Some of the actors could have also done a better job. It’s definitely not the worst horror movie I’ve seen this month and that’s probably the nicest thing I have to say about it.
