Finals are coming up fast at USI, and with that comes stress for everyone. Between finishing projects, writing papers and studying for exams, it can feel overwhelming. But don’t stress; here are some tips to get you through it!
Find Your Perfect Study Spot
Everyone has different study needs. Some people need complete silence, while others work better with a bit of background noise. Try a few different places until you find what works for you.
The silence of the Rice Library offers distraction-free focus, while the comfy lounges in the RFWC provide a more relaxed atmosphere. Maybe you concentrate best in your apartment or dorm room.
Once you find a spot where you can focus, make it your go-to place and stick with it.
Reduce distractions
We all know phones are distracting, but we keep them around anyway. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb and physically move it away from you. Stick it in your backpack or leave it in another room.
Some people work best with background noise. If this is the case, keep the volume low. That way, you’re less likely to get distracted and can focus on your work.
Take Breaks
Your brain isn’t designed to study for five hours straight. After about an hour of studying, get up and move. Try to walk around the building to get your blood flowing again or do some quick stretches to relieve tension. Step outside for some fresh air to clear your mind. Grab a quick snack to refuel your brain.
Start Studying Early
DO NOT CRAM LAST MINUTE!
Start reviewing material at least three to four days before your test. Even just 30 minutes a day makes a huge difference. Your brain needs time to process information, and cramming just doesn’t work as well as multi-hour study sessions.
Test Yourself
Reading your notes over and over feels productive but often isn’t. Instead, make flashcards and use them to test your recall.
Try explaining concepts out loud like you’re teaching someone to solidify your understanding. Quiz yourself on the main points from each chapter to ensure you’ve grasped the core material.
If you can recall information without looking at your notes, you’re much more likely to remember it during the test.
Sleep
Try to go to bed around the same time each night during finals week. Aim for at least seven hours if possible. On test day, set multiple alarms if you’re worried about oversleeping. You can also try to go to bed early the night before a test; that way, you’ll have a better chance of getting more rest.
Don’t Forget to Eat
When you’re stressed and busy, eating regular meals often falls to the bottom of the priority list. But your brain needs fuel to function.
Keep easy snacks on hand, like granola bars, fruit and nuts for quick energy between study sessions. Set alarms for meal times if you tend to forget to eat when you’re focused.
Try to eat breakfast on exam days, even if it’s just a banana, to give your brain the energy it needs. Stay hydrated with plenty of water alongside your coffee to maintain optimal brain function.
Remember
Finals week feels endless when you’re in it, but it’s only five days. Take care of yourself, do your best, and soon you’ll be enjoying summer break.
