Located in the Recreation, Fitness and Wellness Center, a vital resource has been helping members of the campus community for more than 30 years. Archibald Eagle’s Food Closet, more commonly known as “Archie’s Closet,” provides food and personal care items to campus students and employees who need a helping hand.
Established in 1992 by Sandra Lawrence, then-director of Health Services and Wellness, Archie’s Closet began as a collaboration with the Student Social Work Club. Lawrence, who served from 1984 to 2002, had a simple but powerful vision: to keep all students “healthy and happy so that they can do their best.”
The service, initially housed in the University Center, moved to its current location in the RFWC in 2009, where it continues its mission today.
“Students and employees might already have other things they’re struggling with, so Archie’s Closet is here to help and make sure we can help as much as we can,” said Claire Sinvil, a staff member who works closely with the program.
The closet stocks essential non-perishable food items including peanut butter, canned meats, tuna, pasta, rice, beans, vegetables, soups and canned fruits. Personal hygiene products such as toilet paper and tissues are also available.
Perhaps most importantly, all requests for assistance are kept strictly confidential, preserving the dignity of those who use the service.
How to Access Assistance
For USI students and employees seeking assistance, accessing Archie’s Closet is straightforward. Individuals can simply “Ask for Archie” at the RFWC front desk during regular building hours. A valid Eagle Access card is required, but there is no fee to use the service.
Those preferring more privacy can schedule an appointment by emailing the.rec@usi.edu or contacting a specific staff member directly. While emails are not monitored around the clock, staff respond as quickly as possible to all requests.
Supporting the Cause
Archie’s Closet is maintained entirely through donations, and community support is always welcome. Current high-need items include:
- Pasta, rice and beans
- Water bottles and canned milk
- Grab-and-go snacks (granola bars, beef sticks, Pop-Tarts)
- Paper towels and toilet paper
- Personal care items (shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, body wash, lotion)
- Toothpaste and mouthwash
If donating, please make sure items are not expired.
Donations can be dropped off at the RFWC front desk, or monetary contributions can be made through the university website under the Archie’s Closet tab. For large donations, donors are encouraged to contact Claire Sinvil or any staff member at the RFWC.
With continued community support, Archie’s Food Closet will remain a vital resource for the USI community for decades to come, ensuring that no Eagle goes hungry.
Archie’s Closet is located in the Recreation, Fitness and Wellness Center and is open during regular RFWC building hours. For more information, email the.rec@usi.edu.
