“And it wasn’t [a] super lustful kiss scene or anything like that,” said Chad Tew, associate professor of online journalism, “It was [an] innocent kiss, is how I would describe it, just they were both naked, and that was the photograph.”
According to Tew, after The Aerie distributed their magazine, which contained this photograph, to their stands, it disappeared. This prompted The Shield to write about the theft.
The Vol. 37, Issue 7 of The Shield addresses the photograph's controversy. Relevant sections have been marked in red.
Shieldsters debated whether or not the photograph should be included in the article, “Because if you just describe it to somebody, will somebody truly be able to make the decision?” said Tew.
Ultimately, they decided to print the picture because “students need to see and judge for themselves whether this violates their standards,” said Tew.
Editions of The Shield that contained the photograph were also stolen from the stands.
“The advice that the Student Publication Committee gave them was [to] limit [it to] one free copy, and as long as you have that on it, nobody can come and steal every single issue,” said Tew.
This event led to the disclaimer that currently accompanies The Shield.
Both the Shieldsters and the Student Publication Committee thought that The Shield should reprint the edition and it was later redistributed.
