Currently on display in the USI Student Gallery, located on the top floor of the Arts Center, is “The Wheels on the Bus.” This show was curated and created by Claire Kifer, senior visual art K-12 teaching and French studies major, and centers around art education.
Although Kifer has never curated a show before, she worked at Kenneth P. McCutchan Art Center/Palmina F. and Stephen S. Pace Galleries for three years.
“Not a lot of people know what we do,” said Kifer. “Therefore, I created an art show to showcase what we do in the classroom.”
This show features artworks from visual art K-12 teaching majors: Claire Kifer, Holly Karges, Ashley Banks (Instagram @Ashleyeatsclay), Payton Henn and Delaney Smith. It also includes a wide-variety of two and three-dimensional mediums.
“We brainstormed and put everything up together in the student gallery,” said Kifer. “I was very grateful for their help! I couldn’t have done it without them.”
To stay on theme, the gallery was decorated to look like a classroom.
“I used bulletin board paper and borders, name tags for the labels, and art supplies along the window,” said Kifer.
In addition to artwork, the show also includes lesson plans. It was important to Kifer that these were included because of the work that goes into them.
“Lesson plans take a long time to complete because we write down a script, accommodations, standards, objectives, and so much more,” said Kifer.
The closing reception takes place Feb. 12 at 4-5 p.m. in the USI Student Gallery, but the show will remain on display until the 14th.
