Don’t be afraid to ‘Grow Up!’ and embrace ceramics

Refreshments for the “Grow up!” artists’ reception sit near the entrance to the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art Saturday.

The artists’ reception for “Grow Up!,” an art show by Ashley Banks and Jade Young, was held Saturday at the New Harmony Gallery for Contemporary Art. Banks is a senior studio art and PK-12 art education major, while Young is an alumnus who graduated in Spring 2024 with majors in studio art and graphic design. 

The event featured various activities. There was a guessing game for which the prize was a ceramic sculpture titled “Beach Ball Baby” that the pair created. There was also a bracelet-making station and a capsule vending machine filled with ceramic objects.

The show will remain open until Dec. 7.

Nico Armeanu is a junior studio art and German major. Armeanu joined The Shield in Spring 2024 as a photographer and now serves as the arts and entertainment editor. Armeanu was the district winner at the 2022 Congressional Art Competition and won the freshman award in USI’s 53rd Annual Juried Art Contest. In 2023, they won best in show for the teen category at the Wesselman Wood’s Juried Art Contest. Armeanu spends most of their free time making art. Outside of that, they enjoy swimming, playing guitar and working on DIY projects.
