The USI men’s soccer team faced Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in its final home game of the season. USI aimed to clinch a playoff spot, but the team knew nothing would be given to it, as SIUE is at the top of the Ohio Valley Conference standings.
The top six teams in the OVC advance. USI is sitting at seventh — within striking distance. Despite SIUE outshooting USI in both halves, USI found themselves in the lead heading into the second half of the game. SIUE had 11 shots on goal compared to USI’s five.
However, David Davila, freshman forward, found the back of the net first for USI with help from Jason Frye, junior forward. SIUE had numerous chances to tie the game in the final 10 minutes, including three corner kicks and three shots on goal.
With 1:25 remaining, USI fouled SIUE in the box, resulting in a free kick. SIUE’s Nacho Abeal, senior forward, took the kick but ended up shooting it wide.
Within the first five minutes of the second half, SIUE evened the score after a corner kick taken by Yasha Schaerer, sophomore midfielder, which USI contested. However, SIUE’s Jake Karolczak, junior midfielder, was in perfect position for the second attempt and fired a shot into the low right corner.
USI’s Andrew Klott, sophomore goalkeeper, kept USI in the game. Klott faced 23 shots overall and let two pass.
With a little over 12 minutes remaining, USI’s defense headed the ball out, but SHE’s Stephan Moreira, senior forward/midfielder, kept it on the Screaming Eagles’ side and got it past the defense. With a final score of 2-1, SIUE claimed the victory.
