The USI women’s soccer team began their season to slow start.
The Eagles lost their first two games of the season and failed to score any goals in those games.
That all changed on Sunday when red-shirt freshman forward Makenzie Brinker netted USI’s first goal against No. 9 Northern Kentucky University’s Norse tying the game up for the Eagles.
“It felt good to tie up the game,” Brinker said.
Brinker put in the goal off the pass from junior forward Suasn Ellsperman.
“The goal calmed us down a lot and gave us confidence for the rest of the game,” Brinker said.
The Eagles broke the 1-1 tie late into the second half when sophomore forward Julia Kohnen scored 53 minutes in.
Ellsperman and sophomore midfielder Jessica Scott assisted Kohnen with the score.
With the goal, USI was able to take their first lead of the season. The Eagles were able to add some insurance when junior midfield Paige Nuelle added a third goal to make it a 3-1 lead.
“It made us feel good to take a two goal lead,” Nuelle said.
Nuelle put in the third goal off a corner kick by senior forward Megan Kempf.
“Scoring three goals after not scoring any really built up our confidence,” Nuelle said.
The Eagles finished the game with a 3-1 victory over the higher rated Norse.
“We all played well, did a good job and everyone stepped their roles,” head coach Krissy Engelbrecht said.
USI’s next game is Wednesday when the Eagles travel to Florence, Ala. to take on the University of North Alabama.
“We will build on this victory and try to come out with a win against Northern Alabama,” Engelbrecht said.
USI is now 1-2 on the season.
