In the Health Professions Center, the University Health Center and USI Dental Clinic provide medical care for students on and off campus.
The following resources are available to students who pay the $100 fee per semester, part of the Deaconess Office Visit Plan.
- One annual flu shot
- One physical examination every academic year
- Unlimited online appointments
- Unlimited office visits
It also offers tests for the following:
- Mono
- Pregnancy
- Strep throat
- Urinalysis
Students living on campus are automatically enrolled in the plan and cannot opt-out and commuters are allowed to opt in if they choose.
The University Health Center web page has a list of possible diseases, infections and sicknesses a student may have. Along with symptoms, there is a list of possible causes and what to do if a student believes they have an issue listed.
The USI Dental Clinic provides dental hygiene treatment for adults ages 18-59 for a $35 fee. For those younger than 18, there is a $25 fee, and for those older than 59, there is a $30 fee.
Students said they knew of the resources in the University Health Center but not about the resources provided by the USI Dental Clinic.
Reese Butler, freshman biology pre-veterinarian major, said she did not know about the USI Dental Clinic.
“I know the clinic and the health center,” Butler said. “But dentistry, no.”
Butler said she commutes to school and had gone to the clinic once for an emergency. She said she did not schedule an appointment.
“I was able to just go in because they were like, ‘Oh, we have a room free, so actually bring her back,’” Butler said.
Morgan Wade, junior psychology and studio art major, said she also did not know about the USI Dental Clinic but knew about the University Health Center.
“I know they do ultrasounds and general checkups,” Wade said.
Other students said they are familiar with the resources provided by the University Health Center and the USI Dental Clinic.
Jocelyn McClung, freshman business administration major, said she is familiar with the services provided by both resources because she is a student ambassador.
McClung said she thinks it is hard for new students to find the University Health Center.
“That’s why we are glad it’s moving to the new building,” she said.
McClung said it is “great” for students to have access to the University Health Center.
“People that live on campus who don’t have a car, that’s really accessible for them, and even if they don’t want to go find a new doctor,” said McClung. “That’s really good for them to have here.”
Abigail Greer, freshman dietetics major, said she is aware of the services offered by the USI Dental Clinic and the University Health Center.
“I have classes in the Health Professions building, so I’ve been told all about the USI Dental Clinic and the Health Center,” Greer said.
Greer said having access to the USI Dental Clinic and the University Health Center on campus is resourceful for students.
“I think it’s a good thing, especially if you are not from around here and your doctor is not around here,” said Greer. “It’s a good resource to have.”
Briella Bianchini, freshman pre-nursing major, said she went to the University Health Center once because she was sick.
“They just made me sign a form, and they wanted to know my student ID number,” Bianchini said. “That was about it.”
Bianchini said having accessible resources for students who live far from home is a “good idea” and “convenient.”
