As the 2022-2023 academic year comes to a close, we want to say thank you to our 2022-2023 Shield Staff ❤️

This academic year we:
• Released 7 monthly print editions including The Shield’s first print issue dedicated entirely to the Black community of USI
• Published over 250 stories
• Released 28 regular Shield Source newsletters and one special edition newsletter
• Made and released a 56-page special edition magazine, “Unmasked: Unmasking the Story of How COVID-19 Affected the Univeristy of Southern Indiana”
• Hosted Unmasking USI along with @usisga and @usiapb
• Received 17 state awards from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association
• Broke records for website view count, advertisements sold and newsletter open rates
• Built the largest Shield Staff since 1968 with around 40 staff members

What a year 🤯 Thank you to our team for working tirelessly to achieve this success. Thank you to our Editor-in-Chief Shelby Clark, @shelbyy_clarkk, for leading us these past two years. We are so excited to announce Alyssa DeWig, @alyssaadewig, will be the 2023-2024 Editor-in-Chief.

Lastly, thank you to our readers. We do what we do to serve the students and the campus community with factual information, entertaining content and a forum for discussion ❤️

The Shield was so honored to release our 56-page special edition magazine, “Unmasked,” at Unmaking USI. Big thank you to @usisga and @apbatusi for co-hosting the event with us. Unmasking USI was one of the largest events of the year. In addition to the release of “Unmasked,” it featured:

The Panamanian Association hosted its annual Panam

The Panamanian Association hosted its annual Panamanian Carnival Thursday in the Engineering Center. PANAS hosts the carnival annually during SpringFest to celebrate the university and Panamanian culture.

“This is one of the biggest celebrations that we have in Panama,” said Yoel Alvarez, sophomore psychology major and president of PANAS. “For us, it’s just an honor to pass something similar, because it could never be the same, because it’s not in Panama.”

(3/3) The Shield is excited to announce we have been working on a special edition titled, "Unmasked: Unmasking the story of how COVID-19 affected the University of Southern Indiana." The official release date of the magazine is April 24.

This 56-page magazine documents the history of how COVID-19 affected the university's campus through different stages: Going Home, Returning to Campus, Entering New Normal and Managing COVID-19.

"The purpose of 'Unmasked' is to reflect and remember the stories of the USI community during the global COVID-19 pandemic,” said Shelby Clark, Editor-in-Chief of The Shield. “This magazine will serve as a record for these moments in the university's history. I am so proud of my incredible staff for investing their energy and efforts into this historic magazine in addition to the work they complete as full-time students and full-time Shield staff."
