Cross country continues DI stretch at Live in Lou, Hufnagel breaks school record

The cross country teams continued their first Division I stretch at Live in Lou Friday in Louisville, Kentucky.

The men’s team finished 18th out of 31 teams and five spots behind Ohio Valley Conference powerhouse, Eastern Illinois University. EIU finished second in their first two races and 13th in Live at the Lou. They currently hold three national DI championships in cross country.

Senior Noah Hufnagel broke a long-standing USI record previously held by Jim Nolan in the 8K meet. Nolan’s record stood for nearly 40 years with a time of 23:43.0.

Hufnagel finished the 8K in ninth place out of 308 runners with a time of 23:36.6.

Junior Mitchell Hopf was the second Eagle to place, finishing 42nd at 24:15.1.

The women’s team finished 25th out of 41 teams, with juniors McKenna Cavanaugh and Lauren Greiwe finishing in the top 100. 

Cavanaugh came in at 72nd with a 17:53.2 5K, and Greiwe finished close behind at 79th with 17:57.1. 

Both teams finish their DI regular season at the Bradley Pink Classic Oct. 14 in Peoria, Illinois.

The Eagles will travel to Cookeville, Tennessee Oct. 29 for their first OVC Championship meet.
