Grubhub replaces Tapingo, pickup process to remain the same
Students returning to campus are getting back into the swing of things with new classes, professors, jobs, clubs and now, a new way of skipping lines at Chick-Fil-A.
Grubhub, an online and mobile food ordering app, will replace Tapingo as the campus food ordering app at USI starting this year.
Tapingo launched at five universities in the United States in 2012 and had since expanded to over 150 college campuses in the U.S. before being bought out by Grubhub in September of 2018 according to a press release from Grubhub.
The food ordering corporation with over 85,000 restaurant partners in cities across the U.S. and London purchased Tapingo for approximately $150 million.
Users will now have to download the Grubhub app from the App Store or Google Play Store and create an account to place their mobile order.
Once the account is created on the free app, users will need to access the settings page in the right hand corner and scroll to the campus dining option. Search for “University of Southern Indiana” and users will be forwarded to the myUSI page where they are required to type their name and password.
Users will be returned to the app where they now have the list of on-campus dining options.
“Nothing about the operation has changed,” said Katie Stahl, field marketing coordinator at Sodexo. “You’re still ordering from your phone from the app. It’s still coming out of your Eagle Access Card funds and you still pick up at the same locations, it’s basically just a different name.”
Mobile ordering is still available at most campus restaurants including Starbucks, Archie’s Pizzeria, Cyclone Salads, Chick-Fil-A, Sub Connection, Steak ‘n Shake and Fiesta Fuego.
Grubhub will charge users a 59 cent service fee for every order.
Stahl said the procedures and process will continue to work identical to when Tapingo was used on campus. All pickup locations will remain the same with updated signage.
For users who have downloaded the app for the first time, Grubhub will give them $12 off new purchases.
While Grubhub is also a delivery service, Sodexo has no plans of offering on-campus delivery this year.
“Now that we are transitioning into Grubhub, we’re probably going to have a year or two of getting everyone transitioned and understanding everything kind of like what we did with Tapingo,” Stahl said. “If we do, it might be a year or two from now.”
