Student dies in car accident

University student Clay Atkins, 21, died April 6 due to injuries sustained from a single vehicle accident.

Atkins vehicle was reportedly traveling south on St. Croix Road when it went offroad and struck a tree head-on. Perry County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the scene of the wreck shortly before 10:30 p.m. They found him unconscious behind the wheel and he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Atkins was a junior mechanical engineering major at USI. He was born in Jasper, Indiana in March of 1998 and graduated from Perry Central High School in 2016 where he played football according to his obituary.

Atkins spent the last three summers working at Waupaca, a foundry located in Tell City. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating on Lake Patoka and working on about anything alongside his dad and brother and spending time with friends and family according to his obituary.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. April 10 at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel with burial in Lilly Dale Cemetery. Brother Eddie Olberding will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. today and from 9 p.m. until 11 a.m. tomorrow. Memorial contributions may be made to Perry Central Athletic Department.
