Dear Brenna Wu and Opinion Editor,
Upon reading the article about school spirit, we found it very rude, disrespectful, and prejudice! We find it very truculent of you to question our motives for having school spirit. We have contempt for you though because it more than likely stems from a place of misunderstanding, jealousy, and judgmental ignorance.
Let’s first start by saying this is INDIANA. A state unlike 49 others where basketball isn’t just a game it’s a way of life. Basketball is also highly publicized at our school, have you ever seen a tennis schedule put up in the LA building? Education? Orr? Under advertising of other sports is a reason why we do not cheer at sports like tennis – although that would be awesome. We simply do not know when they are.
Your sisters may come out to basketball games but how many of them cry out to the sky in a furious passion of USI spirit? How many of your sisters are thanked by the coach for supporting your team? When you realize that the answer to those questions is zero, you will also realize that sitting in the bleachers is the true PR ploy.
Let’s not forget that we are students first. That apart from going to class we only have so many hours in the day to support our eagles and when we do, we want it to be for a sport we love, a sport that has a spirit like ours, a sport like basketball.
The Eagle’s Nest,
Kyle Willis
