Khloe Miller postponed beginning her college career for a year so she could save up money to pay for it – only to have her first semester cut short.
The freshman psychology major died of a gun shot wound Friday night after an altercation that took place at Devonshire Garden Apartments on Evansville’s east side.
Miller was being transferred to a medical facility for immediate medical attention when officers arrived on the scene at 7:35 p.m, according to the incident report.
She was shot by her suspected ex-boyfriend, Dakotah Clay, 21.
“She had just ended the relationship,” said Jason Cullum, Evansville Police Department’s public information officer. “We don’t know the exact time frame, but that’s what (Clay) was upset about.”
Clay led police on a car chase into Warrick County before turning the gun on himself, Cullum said.
Hadley Brown was a Welcome Week leader that showed Miller and her mother around USI earlier this year.
The conversation during the tour was light, but once you got her to open up, she could chat your ear off, Brown said.
“She was a quiet and shy girl, but she had the biggest heart,” Brown said. “She wouldn’t hurt a fly on her head.”
The two were childhood friends.
Brown grew up in the house directly behind Miller’s and they walked home from elementary school together.
Brown remembers her classmate as “a truly gifted artist.”
“She drew lots of fashion and was really good at it,” she said. “Khloe was an amazing drawer.”
Averie Sievers also remembers Miller’s love of design.
“She loved sunflowers,” the sophomore radio and television major said. “She always wore them in her hair. She wanted to design clothes.”
Sievers describes Miller as “a great friend of (hers).”
The pair went to middle school and high school together.
Miller and Clay dated for two and a half years, Sievers said.
“She was a very shy but sweet girl,” she said.
