Kentucky Wesleyan’s defense was stifling the first 16 minutes of the women’s game. The USI ladies were only 40 percent for the first half, while Kentucky got off to a fast paced start shooting 77 percent over the first 12 minutes.
The lady eagles closed out the first half with a 9-0 run closing down a 31-24 deficit to a 33-31 lead.
“We didn’t play our basketball the first 15 minutes of the game, so it was nice to get there,” said Senior Amie Newhart.
The first half of the game USI had 11 turnovers but scored 20 points off 9 offensive rebounds.
“We are one of the better rebounding teams in the league, we’re good on the glass but when we turn it over we don’t have the chance for rebounds,” said Head Coach Rick Stein
The women came out on fire the second half led by Amie Newhart who ended the game with 27 points and 5 assists; the eagles shot nearly 50 percent over the first 10 minutes, ending the game with a field goal percentage of 42 percent.
“I actually wasn’t feeling that well, I guess I should be sick more often,” Newhart joked, “it’s always nice when everything clicks for you.”
The whole game was a back and forth battle; the lady eagles pulled away the last 10 minutes extending their lead from 10 points to the game ending 17 winning, 85-68.
“Our offense really clicked that second half. We had fewer turnovers and we played well.” Said Stein
The win was a complete team effort though, as USI’s bench outscored KWU’s 26-17. The lady eagles now stand 11-7 overall with their next game at home is against the University of Indianapolis on Jan. 22, tip-off is at 1pm.
