The USI Art Department held the reception for the 2012 Senior Seminar Exhibition on Sunday, Nov. 11. Several people gathered in the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries to see the artwork of 47 senior art majors.
Art Professor Kathryn Waters said she was pleased with the number of people that attended, joking that they were probably breaking fire codes.
“Every fall, we teach classes called ‘The Senior Art Seminar,’” Waters said. “We have three sections of that class this year. It is a requirement for all seniors to take this course.”
During the course, students ready their artwork and submit it for review. If accepted, their work goes on display in the show.
“Each student enters five art or design pieces,” Waters said. “There is a committee that selects the very best pieces to put into the show.”
Waters said she was happy with the students’ work, and the artwork looks “more and more professionally presented every year.”
Studio art major Tara Byers was one of the seniors to have her work displayed.
Byers, who has displayed her work in three previous art shows, said she was particularly happy to have her work in this exhibition.
“I think it’s really cool,” Byers said. “The senior seminar class is a really tough course, so anybody who has their work in that gallery has earned their place there.”
Tristan Thompson was another senior who managed to get his artwork in the show. Thompson has also displayed his work in other art shows on campus, but said he appreciates this seminar more, due to its focus on the seniors.
“There is also the spring show that we can do, which is open to all art students, but it’s nice to have a spotlight on the seniors,” Thompson said.
Senior art major Nicole Wiscaver said that while she was happy to have her artwork displayed in the gallery, the reception was “bittersweet,” and she could feel the end of her college career approaching.
The seniors’ artwork will remain on display in the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries until Dec. 2. The public is welcome to visit the gallery any weekday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
