Minneapolis sculpture artist Alan Wadzinski will hold an all-day workshop starting at 9 a.m. Oct. 18 Technology Center in room 109.
Wadzinski, who has had his art displayed in galleries in New York and Florida, is this fall’s chosen artist to have his work displayed in the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries.
The sculptures Wadzinski makes often resemble animals, as he has a background in taxidermy. The sculptures are also made up of everyday items, including his sculpture of a great marlin, made of fishing rods, and his sculpture of a human face, made of golf club heads.
Wadzinski said this is the third time his art has stood on display in a university art gallery but said the USI art gallery as the “nicest” one his work has been in.
Wadzinski said he looks forward to the workshop, where he plans to construct sculptures with items he “might pick up on the way.”
Ceramics Assistant Professor Alisa Holen contributed a lot to do with the choice of Alan Wadzinski for the fall’s visiting artist. Holen, a long-time friend of Wadzinski’s, suggested him when the 3D art department looked for a candidate for the visiting artist, she said.
Holen says the choice of Wadzinski for the visiting artist in relation to the search for a candidate was just right.
“The timing was perfect,” Holen said.
Wadzinski’s art is currently on display in the McCutchan Art Center/Pace, where students can examine his sculptures.
Roxane Burton, USI art student, said she helped with the setup of Wadzinski’s sculptures, and has had a chance to examine them.
Burton said Wadzinski’s sculptures, “are always interesting to look at,” and the objects he uses in his sculptures are put “in a different light.”
Jack Ashley, USI art student, has also had a chance to examine Wadzinski’s work. Ashley said he enjoys Wadzinski’s sculptures, and he plans to attend the workshop in October.
After the workshop ends at 4 p.m., Wadzinski will hold a lecture in Kleymeyer Hall, starting at 6 p.m., where he will discuss his sculptures in detail. There is no cost to attend the workshop or the lecture, and everyone is welcome to attend.
