Interim dean of the Nursing and Health Professions College was named dean of the college Friday.
Ann White became interim dean July 2011 when Dean Nadine Coudret announced her retirement. This appointment makes her the second dean of the college in its history.
White came to USI in 1990 as a nursing professor, nursing assistant dean and the Doctor of Nursing Practice program director.
“I’m really excited for this opportunity, and I’m just overwhelmed by the number of emails, cards, notes, flowers and hugs that I have gotten within and outside of the college,” White said. “Everyone is supportive of me getting this role, and I’m very honored. It’s very humbling that people have that recognition of me, and they believe I can do this.”
She will officially assume the role as dean July 1 but will start working on goals as soon as possible. She said she wants to take a close look at how students are moving through programs in the school and how they are accepted, and she wants to focus on diversifying the faculty, staff and students.
She is looking forward to being out in the community and bragging about the college’s programs.
“We need to make sure people know what we’re doing, and how well we’re doing it,” she said. “I want to share that information with anyone and everyone who will listen to me.”
Provost Ron Rochon, who announced the new dean Friday, said White brings a wealth of experience to the college because she understands the entire college.
“She understands all of the programs within the college, and she is recognized throughout the entire region as a leader in health professions,” Rochon said.
He said White is respected by nursing students and those in the community.
“She’s extremely respected by professionals in the community and is extremely effective in connecting with students in college, and we’re very thankful for her leadership,” Rochon said.
Rochon said White is brilliant, and her great ideas will continue to have the college built upon a historical legacy.
