Every year breast cancer will strike more than 1.3 million women for the next 20 years, killing an estimate 11 million of them over the two decades, most new cases in countries less prepared to deal with the cancer.
USI will be taking a team of individuals to participate in the Evansville Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure Saturday.
The Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure is an event where participants walk to raise money to fund breast cancer research as well as aid those individuals who are financially unable to pay for screenings and medical treatments.
“This year we have 162 participants,” said Jeannie Kuebler, co-captain of the USI Race for the Cure Team and Recreation, Fitness and Wellness Center senior administrative assistant. “Which is double from previous years.”
Kuebler said the previous Student Wellness Director Sandi Lawrence encourges to sign up for the walk/run.
“I have been walking since 2000,” Kuelber said.
The event will start off with the Survivor Recognition Program at 8 a.m. with an aerobic warm-up afterwards.
Then the 5k walk/run will start at 9 a.m. followed by the one-mile walk. After the walk, the event will finish up with an awards ceremony.
“Our goal is to have a good representation of participants to help with the race for the cure,” Kuebler said.
The registration period for teams here at USI is currently over, but individuals may still be able to register their own teams online. There will also be a free shuttle service that will leave from the Civic Center parking lot to take those interested or involved to the starting location of the event.
“Now is the time for us to see this fight through so that no one ever has to fear breast cancer again,” said Susan G. Koman on the race for the cure website.
