The Shield

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the video The Shield posted where John
Blair, instructor of journalism here, was escorted out of
Congressman Larry Bucshon's town hall meeting at USI. I felt that the
reaction to Blair's statements was overblown; yes, he was
aggressive, but he was not threatening. There were no charges
however, and I'm thankful for that.

I was most disturbed at Bucshon laughing at Blair's statements on
what the coal plants do to the health of our residents. Bucshon
didn't even seem interested in what Blair had to say. And if it's
true (I have no reason to believe otherwise at this point), if a
child in Evansville really is five times more likely than a child in
Fort Wayne to be hospitalized with asthma, he should care. He's an
Indiana congressman. He should be protecting us. And when faced with
a potentially dangerous situation, he laughs. Laughs! That's
disturbing. Even if people want to write it off as nervous laughter
because he didn't know what to say, he didn't respond to Blair at
all, even to say, “I need to look into this issue,” which to me says
he doesn't care enough about our health to even address the issue.

Looks like "we" elected yet another rich guy who doesn't care about
us.
