Clubs, intramural sports, student organizations and other activities are here to help students with this task at USI. Campus Outreach is one of these organizations.
They put together a basketball league called Rim Rockers geared towards freshmen and helping them get involved and make new friends for life.
USI graduate Matt Cazee has led Campus Outreach since 2007 when he graduated. He wanted to create something a lot of people would want to play. Because intramural basketball does not start until January, he chose basketball- Rim Rockers.
“It excites me to hear people talk about Rim Rockers and the competition in the league,” Cazee said. “It is also great because everybody makes the playoffs too.”
Junior international studies major Ty Beckman and sophomore special education major Jon Adams both have been a part of Rim Rockers and Campus Outreach since their freshmen year and believe it is a great program for guys to get involved and meet new people on campus.
Rim Rockers is the doorway to Prime Time, which is a weekly meeting held on at 9 p.m. Wednesdays in Forum 1, and it is a time for people to socialize and listen to Cazee and other members of the Campus Outreach program tackle questions college students might have about life.
“I enjoy going to Prime Time because it is a chance to have fellowship with others and it helps me to find myself and answer questions I might be struggling with,” Beckman said.
Beckman said going to Prime Time could be life changing for anyone and a great way to initiate relationships.
“At Prime Time we talk about the gospel and put things from the Bible into an aspect that is understandable,” Adams said. “I’m not big on going to church, but I have learned so much from Cazee and the other guys. They have become really close friends of mine.”
Rim Rockers is mostly focused on freshmen, and it is really important to get them involved early, Adams said.
“It is a fun environment for them and there are lots of good guys here that can be good influences on them like they have been on me,” Adams said.
Campus Outreach arranges numerous activities throughout the year as well, including Football Friday’s, the dunk contest after Rim Rockers, and 3-on-3 tournaments at the beginning and end of the year.
Anyone can join Campus Outreach and be involved in the activities. At last year’s first Prime Time meeting, there were about 315 students there, Cazee said.
“A lot of people enjoy Prime Time because they don’t have to talk,” Cazee said. “They can just listen.”
