EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The USI Men’s Tennis team breezed past Saint Joseph’s College Friday afternoon at the USI Tennis courts. The Eagles handled them comfortably with a score of 3-0 in doubles and 5-1 in singles.
The Screaming Eagles swept through three doubles matches, beginning with Senior Joseph Boesing and Junior Diego Gimenez winning 8-1. Sophomores Ben Boesing and Juan Quiroz did their part with an 8-0 win in the second game, while sophomores Kory Poland and Rodrigo Flores completed the sweep in the same fashion in the third game.
“It was a good and comfortable win,” Quiroz said. “It gives us confidence to keep moving forward towards our main goal of winning conference and making a run to the last rounds of the national tournament.”
USI also led a victory against Saint Joseph’s College in singles, winning five out of six matches, leaving them with an 8-1 win overall. Gimenez, Quiroz, Flores, Boesing and Robert Nieters were the ones responsible for the victories.
With this victory, the Eagles improve to a 7-4 overall record and a 2-0 record in the GLVC.
“This victory is great for our goal of competing for a National Championship. We’re up with the best teams in the nation and we will continue to compete hard in order to achieve this,” USI Men’s Tennis Head Coach, Chris Crawford explained.
After starting out with a bumpy season, the Screaming Eagles seem to have turned it around, winning their third straight overall game and their second straight in the GLVC.
“We went through a rough point. Now we’re on a row and we’ve been playing great; we have to keep it going,” Gimenez said.
The Eagles look forward now to their next game against Northern Kentucky University (sixth in the Midwest Region, 9-2 overall) when they face them on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. on the USI Tennis Courts.
