Eagles win first series of the season
The USI baseball team won the series against Grand Valley State University after a 16-6 victory Sunday at the USI Baseball Fields
After starting off strong in the first inning with six runs the team kept its momentum going for the rest of the game.
Head coach Tracy Archuleta said what got them in trouble in the previous game was easing up after their lead.
“We talked about quality at-bats and not worrying about scoring but worrying about your role at the plate,” Archuleta said. “Our pitchers did a really good job with throwing strikes and having that cushion.”
After losing the first game of the series, USI came back strong with large leads in the next two games.
“It’s all about winning series and our guys did a really good job of bouncing back and understanding the adjustments we did need to make,” Archuleta said. “We did that and ended up on top against a good quality opponent.”
Sophomore left fielder Drake McNamara had three runs, four hits and 4 RBIs. McNamara said even with an extended lead his teammates help each other stay motivated.
“The other team stayed on us, but we were able to bounce back after every inning,” McNamara said. “We just try to focus on winning each inning and each pitch. That’s what it comes down to.”
