All right, now before I get this started I will say there are more important things I could be discussing. However, this is a pressing issue that has been bothering me for a long time now.

I’m tired of the disparaging remarks I get when I tell people that I am a Coldplay fan.

Now, I’m a fan of all types of music. Truthfully, I have a tendency to be a bit of a snob when it comes to music. However, Coldplay is a good band.

And for all of you out there who will try to tell me once again that Coldplay is “Diet Radiohead” all I have to say to you this; you’re wrong.

I love Radiohead, I also love Coldplay and I will tell you this; they are nothing alike. Other than the fact both bands hail from England and are heavy into instrumentals Thom Yorke and Chris Martin’s musical ambitions are nothing alike.  Radiohead relies more on synths and octave sliding vocals while Coldplay focuses on the use of keyboards. Matins vocals are also nothing like Yorkes, just listen to them before you say Coldplay is diet Radiohead again. Anyone who listens to both bands knows their voices are absolutely nothing alike.

Lyrically, neither bands are that similar either. Hell, listen to Radiohead and Coldplay, tell me if you think they sound alike. I don’t understand where this comparison comes from.

So, I do not understand why everyone is hating on Coldplay. My friend the other night was giving me a hard time about this and as hard as I tried to defend my band with all of the examples I could give as to why they are good, I got shut down with a disapproving head nod and a disappointed look.

Coldplay has proved they are a band that will always evolve. Listen to a Viva la Vida and Mylo Xyloto and tell me if you think that they sound alike. They don’t. One album is heavy into religious undertones and the use of strings and their newest album Mylo Xyloto is much more computer produced and piano driven.

Not only that, but they are instrumental geniuses. No other band that I can think of arranges their instrumental solos and layers their instruments and vocals so effortlessly. Martins vocals are distinctly his own, their sound is their own. They are an amazing band.

Please stop trying to tell me Coldplay sucks, I’ll never agree.
