The madness is back. March is best known for St.Patrick’s day, rain and the biggest college basketball tournament in the country.
This past Sunday, the field of 68 was unveiled to the country. Since 2001, the tournament has had 65 teams in the field with one play-in game. This year, the committee decided to expand the field to 68 to give teams on the bubble a better chance to prove they belong in the tournament.
There will be four play-in games that will take place in Dayton to determine who the last four teams are to make the field. UT-San Antonio will play against Alabama State for one 16 seed position and UNC-Asheville will play against Arkansas Little Rock for another 16 seed.
The big change this year will be the two other games.
The University of Southern California will play against Virginia Commonwealth University for an 11 seed spot to play against Georgetown, and UAB will play against Clemson for a 12 seed spot to play against West Virginia.
The top four seeds of the tournament are Ohio State, Duke, Kansas and Pittsburgh. Every team won their conference tournament besides Pittsburgh. Ohio State is the number one seed overall of the whole tournament.
The number one seeds will battle through their respective regions to have the opportunity to make it to the final four in Houston. Standing in their way are top teams from the power conferences and mid-majors trying to play the role of Cinderella and steal some wins away from the bigger conference schools.
Every year there are upsets and tons of drama. Expect nothing less in this year’s tournament. There is not one clear cut team that stands out this year and the competition is fairly even across the board. This is the beginning, lead-up part.
