The USI women, 10-8 overall, fought and clawed for 55 minutes of game play but came up short against University of Indianapolis, 11-7 overall, losing 101-100.
The game was extended into overtime 3 times and each instance the lady eagles battled back. During the second overtime Senior Amie Newhart hit huge 3 with 6 seconds remaining to tie the game.
“I’m proud of the girls they really poured their heart and soul into that game,” said Head Coach Rick Stein.
Despite the number of points that were scored the eagles held the greyhounds to 47 percent from field goal range. A lot of shots were taken by both teams, which resulted in a high number of rebounds for USI, 49 to be exact. The women took 91 shots compared to Indy’s 55.
“When you shoot 30 percent you are going to have a lot of rebounds,” said Senior Ellen Young, “There isn’t much you can do when shots just aren’t falling.”
Coach Stein emphasized that the ladies played tough basketball the last half and during the 3 overtimes.
“We played tough basketball towards the end. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out, but there were spots we played well.”
The ladies shot 78 percent from the free throw line going 30 for 38. Many of these free throws came late in the game and were vital in keeping the ladies drive alive.
The next game will be January 27th at the pack against Lewis University; tip-off is at 5:15
