I think a spiritual life is an important aspect of a meaningful life. Our students are quite remarkable in their ability to care and nurture this wonderful community at USI.

I would like to clarify two quotes that were attributed to me (in last issue’s “Searching for Spiritual Sustenance”).

The first quote, “there is no way the Shi’te and Sunni will come together”  – in this statement I was referring to their worship service differences even to the times that they break the fast during Ramadan. I made an example of the minutes (60 seconds in one minute) that differ in their Ramadan calendars for breaking the fast. So that may be where the second quote was attributed to me, “the too many minute (small) differences.”  I do not believe religion’s differences are small.

I also want your readers to know that there are other groups that are on campus that were not mentioned in the article.

Religious Life is actively working to assist in the formation of an Islamic student group on campus. We are working with the University of Evansville to provide our Jewish students an opportunity to gather with other Jewish students in a “Hillel.” We also have a Pagan group on campus that meets regularly and is active.

Within our student groups we have varying beliefs and yet we are able to foster ten religious groups on campus. The main goal is not identifying our differences, but respecting our unique gifts and together seeking ways that we can understand and appreciate the gifts we all bring to this community.
