The university of southern Indiana women’s basketball team is 16-10 overall and 12-6 in the conference. This weekend they will play the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference at the physical activities center against the University of Indianapolis.
The university of Indianapolis is currently 14-12 overall and 9-9 in the Conference
The first time these two teams met was on January 22 at the physical activities center. U Indy beat the University of Southern Indiana in triple overtime 100-101. This was the first time in school history that USI had been into triple overtime.
Katie Lyons scored 32 points. That coupled with Kristin Turner’s 19 gave the Greyhounds the advantage they needed to stave off a late charge by the Eagles.
Senior Amie Newhart scored in 39 points, a career high for her that night. The next highest scorer for the eagles was fellow Senior Ellen Young with 16 points; despite only shooting 35 percent from the field the eagles were able to push the game to three overtimes.
On February 10th these two teams met again while USI was on a series of road games. 40 percent shooting and 16 points from Newhart pushed the Eagles over the Greyhounds 60-58.
Katie Lyons came up with 9 points but Kristin Turner scored zero with 14 minutes of play.
The matchup is now tied at 1-1 with each team winning at the others home. If the trend continues the Eagles will be in Jeopardy this weekend. To win at home not only will the energy from the crowd have to be utilized but USI will need to out rebound their opponents similar to the last team they met, in that meeting USI had 41 rebounds to U Indy’s 28.
Newhart, Young and Kristin Raker are all deadly from beyond the arc a tool that will surely be utilized to win at home. In many of the games they’ve played this year the USI women have had one good half and one sub par half.
Tough, tenacious basketball will have to be played for 40 minutes for the ladies to come out on top. First round of the Conference Championships tips off at 5:30 pm at the physical activities center.
