Dedication to USI Basketball goes far beyond the hallowed floors of the court and lasts much longer than the ruckus cheers of the rabid fans. That was evident as the men’s and women’s teams were introduced on the first night of the 89th West Side Nut Club’s Fall Festival.
“USI is like a family. We’ve gotten to know the boys and girls weekly.” Harriet Gentry said.
Gentry, along with her husband Kenny, has attended the USI basketball games for 30 years.
Senior women’s basketball player Ellen Young reflects positively on the fan dedication that the Gentry’s, as well as others, show.
“It’s always good to see the community come out, it’s good to see them at games too.”
Head Men’s Coach Ron Watson spoke with an excited expression as he noted the outreach that the local community puts forth.
“Even here, this is unusual. To have 50,000 people hearing something about your program.”
The team hasn’t been without hardship. Last year was evident of that. With the mournful passing of Jerone Lewis the team was also disallowed to perform in the post season, despite being 24-3 and 15-1 at home.
“They showed great character to accomplish what they did.” Kenny Gentry said
“We were 14-1 at home last year at the PAC and that was because of all you guys out there,” women’s head coach Rick Stein said. “We love when teams come to our house and play, we’ve had so much success because our 6th man is you guys.”
